About Us

Southgate Colts Football Club

Southgate Utd Colts (as the club was originally called), was formed in 1988 from an idea by Paul Bruton and Johnnie Matthews who both had sons wanting to play football and to give other boys in Launceston an opportunity to play as well. They started to train at St Stephens Primary School as the majority of the boys lived in the St Stephen’s area.

A team was formed at U12s level entering into the Kingsley League with
the following season seeing even more boys from Launceston and the surrounding villages joining the club creating an U11s team playing in the Bodmin & District Youth League.

In 1990 Southgate decided to enter into the Devon Junior & Minor League (DJM) in Plymouth entering U11s, U12s, U13s and U14s, with the U16s and U18s playing in the Sunday Bodmin & District League.

Over the next few years the club grew winning trophies in the League and Cup competitions within the DJM league and in 1996 had the first two Southgate players, Brendon McGovern and Andrew Avery signed on by Plymouth Argyle for a two year apprenticeship and the U16s team reaching the final of the Cornwall County U16s Luke Cup

By the season of 1997/98 Southgate Colts had teams at U10, U11, U12, U13, U14, U15 and U16 all playing in the DJM and two U12 teams playing in the Sunday Kingsley League; an U9 group with between 30 and 40 boys regularly attending training sessions and the senior side of the club now had three teams, mainly from the talented young players that had progressed through the junior teams; they played in the Duchy League in divisions 2, 3 and 4.

Over the next ten years the club continued to play in the DJM league and Kingsley league and for the first time joined the East Cornwall Youth league; many trophies were won at league and cup levels but also awards given to teams for fair play. For the second time in the club’s history the U16s team in 2004 reached the Cornwall County U16s Luke Cup final. This decade also saw the introduction of Mini Soccer which would enable many younger children to start accessing football much earlier than in the past; all coaches and people working with children had to be CRB checked and Southgate Colts became only the eighth club in Cornwall to be awarded the Charter Standard award from the Football Association. After considerable success over many years the men’s team sadly folded but was reintroduced back into the Duchy League in 2008 with the intention of feeding U16 players into this squad.

The last eight years has probably seen the most change within football and we continue as a club to need as much support and help from volunteers to adhere to all the new policies and regulations and to take the club forwards.

To all of our wonderful volunteers and those to come, a big thank you, we wouldn’t be the club we are without you!
